Yes, Thinking Putty is safe and non-toxic. We go through hundreds of safety checks each year and use the most stringent testing process to ensure that our Thinking Putty is not only fun but safe to use.
Thinking Putty does not include latex, gluten, wheat compounds, or phthalates. Crazy Aaron's is not a food grade facility and cannot guarantee the possibility of cross contamination.
Thinking Putty is not for children under 3 as it can pose a choking hazard. Some products like our Magnetic Thinking Putty and Mixed by Me Kits are recommended for ages 8+. Read more about our safety standards: GCC Certificate of Conformity
How do I dispose of my Thinking Putty®?
Thinking Putty is made of non-toxic silicone and never dries out! Over a long time, putty can pick up fibers from fabrics, dust, or other things in the environment and may need to be retired.
Silicone is safe for people and the planet so your Thinking Putty can be tossed in with regular household waste. The tin is made of food grade material and can be reused for crafts, storage, and projects or it can be recycled with other metals like soup cans.
How do you clean Thinking Putty® out of clothes, fabric, and carpet?
Yes, it happens to all of us sooner or later! Accidentally sat on your Thinking Putty? Left it in your pants pocket? Got little bits stuck in your shirt? Found the dreaded lump of putty in your child's hair?
Thankfully, there are some time-tested techniques for removing Thinking Putty from hair, clothing, and other sorts of fabrics.
If the putty enmeshed itself into the pores in the fabric like blue jeans, simple scraping & tugging isn't going to remove it…
First, remove as much of the putty as possible from the surface. You don't have to go crazy scraping away, but you don't want a thick blob attached to the clothes either. Putty sticks to putty very well! Use a small lump that you've scraped off to pick the remaining putty away.
Using 70% (or greater) Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol, position the fabric over the sink and liberally pour some rubbing alcohol over the stain. Using a paper towel or wash cloth, rub the alcohol into the putty. Immediately you should notice the Thinking Putty liquifying and moving away from the fabric. As you mix in the rubbing alcohol you can probably pull away chunks of putty that have become freed from the fabric.
After the putty is removed, you may still have a minor stain on the fabric. A quick run through the washing machine often clears this up. Use a liquid detergent pre-treatment and, for most fabrics, the stain should wash away.
Didn’t work? Consult an expert!
Drop off the clothes at the local dry cleaner and let them know the stain is "silicone-based". They may be able to use their secret powers to help you.

Thinking Putty & Slime FAQs
How do I open or close my tin?
\We recommend letting your Thinking Putty sit label-side up for a couple of hours on a flat, level surface. This allows most of the putty to settle back into the bottom of the tin. It may still leave a little stuck to the top, but twisting the lid and then pulling should release it.
Another trick: set the tin on its side and let it go — it will start to roll naturally. Once it stops rolling, open it from the side that's on top. There's usually less putty on that side, so there will be less tension when you pull it open.
Mini Thinking Putty tins include a small, clear plastic disk inside the lid that helps the putty stay in the bottom of the tin. This disk should always be replaced before closing the tin. If yours has been misplaced, we're happy to send you a new one.
To close your tin, make sure the lid is level with the base and gently press down, holding the lid in an almost “claw”-like grip. This is the most effective way to get a secure seal.
We're continually improving our products and packaging. Thinking Putty tins are getting an overhaul to make it easier to separate the lid from the base, and you'll already notice the change on new mini tins.
Why is my putty too sticky?
If you have a brand-new tin of Thinking Putty and it feels sticky, this is often due to external temperatures. Let the putty rest at room temperature, or place it in the refrigerator for a few minutes.
The more you play with your Thinking Putty, the more natural hand oils, lotions, water, dirt, and debris it collects. These “additives” can break down its properties over time.
The best way to help your Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putty last is to store it in its original tin when you're not playing with it, and to wash or sanitize your hands before each use. Make sure your hands are completely dry, or that any sanitizer has fully absorbed, before picking up the putty. Once putty becomes contaminated, it unfortunately can't be cleaned or restored.
Why won't my putty change color?
Our Hypercolor / Color Changing Thinking Putty sometimes needs a temperature “shock” to shift between color states. If your putty is stuck in its warm-color state, place it in the freezer to shock it back to cold. If it's resting in its cold-color state, wrap it around a warm mug or glass. This will bring it out of its dormant phase, and it should work normally afterward.
Why does my tin seem to have less putty than expected?
Each tin of Thinking Putty is packaged by weight, not by the volume of the container, as noted on the front label.
Why does Liquid Glass Thinking Putty feel different from other putty?
The Liquid Glass collection includes Get Ready With Me, Liquid Glass, Falling Water, Rose Lagoon, Lily Pond, Flowing Lava, Honey Drop, Over Easy, and Morning Dew. This collection stands apart from our other putty properties: it won't have the same elasticity, since it isn't made with the same composition. Liquid Glass stretches a bit before. It's meant to be enjoyed for its transparency and unique feel.
How can I clean my putty?
Thinking Putty does not support microbial growth. Germs last on or in Thinking Putty no differently than they would on a hard surface, like a stapler — silicone simply doesn't give viruses a place to survive. That said, Thinking Putty will naturally pick up fibers, dust, and other particles from its environment.
We recommend always using clean, dry hands when playing with Thinking Putty, and storing it back in its tin with the lid on when you're finished.
How do I get slime out of fabric or clothing?
Slime on clothing or rugs is a common mishap, and it's usually easy to remove. Here's the best method:
Remove the excess first. Gently pick or scrape off as much slime as you can using your nail or a dull edge, like a spoon or butter knife. Try to lift it off rather than smear it further into the fabric.
Rinse with hot water. Run the affected area under hot water to help loosen any remaining residue.
Apply soap. Work in a bit of dish soap or laundry detergent, gently rubbing the area, then rinse again with hot water.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 if any residue remains, then launder as normal — this should take care of it.
